Sometimes a slice of cheese or piece of fruit will suffice, but having some yummy, nutritious snacks around helps keep my hands out of bags of potato chips or TH’s supply of Oreos or doughnuts. If you want to put a little prep in your snacks, here are a 5 foods to try.

Healthy Snack Prep: 5 to Try

1 >> Trail Mix

Snack Prep: 5 different snacks that require preparation but are super yummy and healthy to fuel your runs.

Sometimes you can find trail mix at cheaper prices than buying ingredients individually, but I often struggle to find trail mix that is both cheap and that I enjoy. Tossing nuts, raisins, and seeds into a big container and shaking it all up can make a quick mix that is easy to grab.

The last mix I made:

  • Almonds
  • Peanuts
  • Raisins
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Part of a leftover bag of TH’s M&Ms

…and I didn’t even have to go shopping. I had all those ingredients in my pantry.

2 >> Oat Applesauce Muffins

Snack Prep: 5 different snacks that require preparation but are super yummy and healthy to fuel your runs.

Muffins made with whole wheat flour, oats, and applesauce are hearty and delicious. These freeze really well and are great for breakfast or a quick snack as you run out the door. I find I can eat them and go for a run or leap into a yoga class without any trouble.

Toss in some cranberries, too!

3 >> Homemade granola bars

A little more complicated in process than trail mix, homemade granola bars were still less difficult than I imagined.

4 >> Hardboiled eggs

Snack Prep: 5 different snacks that require preparation but are super yummy and healthy to fuel your runs.

Hardboiled eggs are super easy. I like to toss them in the oven in a muffin pan after I’ve already had the oven on for some reason. Placing them in paper muffin cups will lessen the brown spots from the hot metal. I make a half-dozen at a time.

5 >> Protein balls

I haven’t tried protein balls yet, but they look fun to make! It’s on my list of things to do and I’ll let you know how it works out.
